Andrew Black was born in 1966 and lives in Dublin, Ireland. Black
entered this year's WSOP Main Event with a little help from his friends
back in Ireland - the players and dealers of the Merrion Club in Dublin
put up the $10,000 entry fee for Black. Black did them proud with a 5th
place finish in an entry field of 5619 players - good enough for an
even $2 million in prize money. Andrew Black entered the final table as
the chip leader with about 8.1 million in chips, but the luck of the
Irish wasn't enough for first place. This year's Main Event was not
Black's first, he came in 14th in 1997 and cashed out $29,680 (by
comparison, this years 14th place paid 400,000). Being so close to the
bracelet in 1997 was enough for Black to return to the WSOP after a
taking time off to practice Buddhism and become a Buddhist monk. Black
claims his religious practices have helped him better manage his
emotions at the poker table and become a better player.
Black seems to be putting some of that 2 million dollar bank
roll into circulation since the Main Event - he's had a 3rd place
finish in the No Limit Hold ‘em event at the 2005 Borgata Poker Open
worth $38,475, and two other cashes in tournaments in Dublin totaling
roughly another 10k. Andrew was nominated for Cardplayer's
Sportsmanship Award and is a well liked and respected player on the
tournament circuit. Black mainly plays poker online, but with his new
tournament bank roll and higher state of consciousness under his belt,
we're sure to see him in many more major tournaments in the near future.
