Harry Demetriou is somewhat of a newcomer to the tournament poker
scene, having started competing in 2002. Harry is a retired clinical
scientist who then ventured successfully into the stock market.
Demetriou's venture into tournament poker can also be classified as yet
another success with career winnings around $1.2 million. In his own
trip report of the 2004 WSOP, Harry explains how he prepared for the
event similar to the way an athlete would prepare for the Olympics. To
improve his endurance during long multi-day tournaments, Harry quit
smoking and began working out up to 90 minutes every other day. He
stresses how poker tournaments must be taken seriously and treated
professionally if a player is to succeed today. Demetriou also explains
how reading every book on poker and discussing hands and situations
with fellow professional players helped him tremendously in his rapid
improvement as a player.
Some of Harry Demetriou's
accomplishments in tournament poker include: 3rd place in the 2002 WSOP
No Limit Hold 'em event worth $80,200, 3rd place in the 2003 Crown
Australasian Poker Championships good for $69,728, and 18th place in
the 2004 WSOP Main Event taking home $147,500 in prize money. Recently,
Demetriou had a great showing at the 2005 WSOP making two final tables.
Harry finished 2nd in the $2,500 Short Handed No Limit Hold 'em event
collecting $163,850 and 6th place in the $2,000 No Limit Hold 'em event
worth $123,915. Harry Demetriou's professional and disciplined approach
to tournament poker will no doubt continue to place him at final tables
well into the future.
