A true "rags to riches" story, Johnny Chan was born in Canton, China
and moved around with his family to Hong Kong, Arizona, and finally
Houston, Texas. Chan dropped out of college at age 21 to move to Las
Vegas and become a professional gambler. Chan is well known for his
appearance in one of the most popular poker movies ever Rounders
, where he plays himself, and is touted in the movie to be the best
player in the world. Chan has an interesting ritual of keeping an
orange in front of him during tournaments - Johnny claims the aroma
combats the cigarette smoke.
Johnny Chan became a Poker Hall of
Fame inductee in 2002, complimenting the achievements of a legendary
poker career. Chan's achievements include: Ten WSOP bracelets in
five different events including No Limit Hold 'em, Limit Hold 'em, Pot
Limit Omaha, Deuce to Seven Draw, and Seven Card Stud. One of only two
players (himself and Doyle Brunson) ever to win the WSOP two years in a
row, in 1987 and 1988 (also finishing second in 1989!) Some of Johnny's
most recent successes were his wins in 2003 at the 34th annual WSOP,
cashing in more than $382,000.
