Carlos Mortensen was born in Ambato, Ecuador in 1972 and eventually
moved to Madrid, Spain with his family in 1987. Carlos got into poker
in his teenage years when his chess club organized a game. Carlos
quickly took to the game and won enough money in the first week for him
to consider taking poker more seriously. At the time, poker was illegal
in Spain making it hard for Carlos to pursue it full-time, so he and
his wife began traveling around Europe and America then eventually
settling in Las Vegas where Carlos could play in as many tournaments as
he liked. Their decision to move proved to be a good one in 2001 when
Carlos captured the highest title in poker - winning the WSOP
Championship Event at age 29.
The WSOP win provided Carlos with
a $1.5 million bankroll and the luxury to continue following the
tournament scene all over the world with his wife by his side. Since
then, Carlos has collected over $3.4 million in career tournament
winnings. Some of Mortensen's achievements in tournament poker include:
1st place in the 2002 World Poker Finals worth $53,280, 1st place in
the 2003 WSOP $5,000 Limit Hold 'em event taking home $251,680 and a
gold bracelet, 1st place in the 2004 L.A. Poker Classic worth $117,650,
and 1st place in the 2004 WPT Festa al Lago III Poker Tournament
collecting and even $1million in prize money. In May of 2005, Carlos
Mortensen reminded everyone that he's still a contender by taking 2nd
place in the Mirage Poker Showdown worth $72,844.
