Stu Ungar

Stu Ungar was born September 8th 1953 and died on November 22nd 1998. Stu Ungar was a gifted card player with a genius IQ and a photographic memory. Ungar was almost instinctive in his play, able to calculate complex analysis of situations and strategic maneuvers with lightning speed. Stu Ungar was a dominating gin player all over the east coast before moving to Las Vegas in 1976. It soon became impossible for Stu to continue playing gin after such dominating feats like at the end of a $50,000 gin tourney when he forecasted the cards of the remaining players correctly for the crowd of onlookers. Unfortunately, Stu Ungar's life story is not one of success, his addictions to high stakes gambling and drugs would hinder his potential as a card player and eventually lead to his death at age 45.

Stu Ungar's accomplishments in tournament poker are unmatched and revered by anyone with an appreciation of the game. In 1980 Stu Ungar won the WSOP championship with virtually no experience playing no limit hold 'em, collecting $365,000 in prize money. The next year Stu won the main event again, as well as the Deuce to Seven Draw event. After a long hiatus, Ungar would return to the WSOP in 1997 and win the event once again talking home $1 million for first place. Although the prize money for the time isn't as impressive as today's monster pools, Stu Ungars win rate for the amount of tournaments he entered is astounding - 3 time WSOP champion, 5 WSOP bracelets, and 10 major tournament wins with buy-ins of 5k or higher and the man only entered about 30 major events in his life.
